Re-reading the Colonial Archives, directed by Dr. Rona Sela, Animation: Dana Durr, © 2022

"Re-reading the Colonial Archives," a presentation created for the Nakba Memorial Foundation by Dr. Rona Sela and animated by Dana Durr, deals with how colonial history is written in Zionist archives. It shows how, before 1948, military Zionist forces gathered materials about the Palestinians for control, supervision, surveillance and occupation and tracks the settler colonial enterprise after the Nakba. Focusing on visual aspects, it suggests reading the various settler colonial archives in two phases: pre-1948 – the mechanism collecting information about Palestinian villages and inhabitants for occupation and control purposes (the surveys, “village files,” aerial photographs, etc. ); and post-1948 – documents, maps, plans, etc. that describe ethnic cleansing, military regime and planned official mechanism erasing Palestinian villages and their features, while inhabiting them by Israelis. The short presentation describes the role of the archives in the colonial apparatus and exposes their destructive features and violent terminologies. It discusses histories hidden in the colonial archives and charts their capability to return knowledge and contents to indigenous history.
